Crime Prevention Month is less than two months away, so what better time than now to make preparations to celebrate your safe community. Members of Neighborhood Watch groups, police, sheriffs, and other concerned citizens work very hard to make their communities safe for everyone who lives there. Celebrate Safe Communities (CSC), a project created by the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is designed to help law enforcement and their community partners kick off celebrations of Crime Prevention Month.
The Celebrate Safe Communities kick-off is scheduled for October 2–4, 2008, and is designed to spotlight communities’ crime prevention efforts, enhance public awareness of vital crime prevention and safety messages, and recruit year-round support for ongoing prevention activities that help keep neighborhoods safe from crime. This initiative will help local communities organize safety-focused events. Local CSC activities held in October to coincide with Crime Prevention Month will help Americans of all ages recognize that a safer community is no accident and that crime prevention is everyone’s business every day of the year.
The Celebrate Safe Communities website is used as the CSC registration site and has many useful tools as you are planning your event. Visit the CSC Frequently Asked Questions section to find out all you need to know about what CSC is and all you need to put together your own celebration. In the CSC tools section, you will find the CSC logo, ideas for your own local initiative, and the CSC coloring page. You will also find four webinars facilitated by NCPC and NSA, including CSC 101: What You Need to Get Started, Nuts and Bolts of Physical Security: What Residents Need To Know, The Media Can Be Your Partner! How To Make It Happen With CSC, and Watch Out and Help Out: Neighborhood Watch and More. CSC participants can also view resources that NCPC, NSA, and BJA feel can help you in your crime prevention effort year round.
Make sure to register your event soon so you can qualify for some of the great giveaways you can receive from Celebrate Safe Communities. If you have any questions about registration or CSC in general contact Jeff Broderson at 202-261-4136 or csc@ncpc.org.
