The core of the issue when it comes to background checks is de-facto gun registration.
Most firearms owners I speak to believe (I think with justification) that the goal of gun control is a complete ban on the right to defend ones self and family.
Right now, the strongest defense I have against that is that no-one knows what guns I have, so they CAN not be taken away. Registration would have me trade that for a promise that they WILL not be taken away.
Does that sound like a wise trade?

There actually is no gun show loophole as the following link confirms:http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=4835

Anyone who thinks that there is a gun show loophole should visit various gun shows and see for themselves.

Not only is the loophole non-existant, the Department of Justice's own figures on felons who purchased guns used in gun crimes report that only 2% of them were purchased from gun-shows--and there is no way to determine if they were aqcuired in private sale or if they filled out the 4473 and were called in to NICS.

It has been statistically proven that the best method of preventing crime is to *ARM THE POPULACE*.

Only criminals like to have their sheep unarmed.
