Today is the first day of October and, subsequently, the first day of Crime Prevention Month, 2007. Since 1984, communities all over the country have designated October as the official month of crime prevention. It is a time to spread the message of prevention and rally for the cause, as well as a time to celebrate past efforts and successes.
Perspectives about crime have changed markedly since 1984. Whereas 20 years ago most people believed that they were helpless to prevent crime, most people now recognize that they play an integral role in keeping their homes and communities safe. The police can not be everywhere at once. It is, in fact, up to residents and communities as a whole to address the problem and look out for one another.
The National Crime Prevention Council promotes many programs across the country, including Neighborhood Watch, National Night Out, and Project Safe Neighborhoods.
On our website, you will find many resources that you can use in your own neighborhoods such as brochures, full-text publications, and resources specific to Crime Prevention Month and Halloween.
Also, in celebration of Crime Prevention Month, NCPC has released its new crime prevention calendar for the year. This helpful kit includes a wealth of information and reproducible materials to help you spread the crime prevention message. Be sure to order your copy today.
Keep up the good work, everybody. Happy Crime Prevention Month!
