A great way to build excitement for local crime prevention efforts is to hold a big neighborhood event, and next Tuesday communities across the United States will be doing just that. Tuesday, August 1st is National Night Out, a nationwide event that brings communities together to show that they are determined to keep crime and violence off their streets. National Night Out events send a powerful message that residents won’t tolerate crime, and they are a great way to bring neighbors together to discuss public safety and ways to improve their communities.
What National Night Out events look like depends on the neighborhood. Some communities organize large events where volunteers hand out safety and crime prevention information while others throw block parties complete with a cook behind a grill. But no matter how the events are organized, the goal is for neighbors and local law enforcement officers to get to know one another, discuss any problems in the neighborhood related to crime and violence, and educate one another on how to improve public safety.
If you don’t know if your community is planning a National Night Out event, you can check with your local police department to find out. If no event is planned, consider planning one yourself.
